So many things wash ashore here. Too much trash, but often treasures too. I usually have my eyes on the sea, looking for tails or the silhouette of jacks in the waves, something to throw at. On this day it was no different, when I heard Johnny exclaim behind me and turned to find him examining a clear glass bottle, corked, with a message in it.
The note inside was wrapped with five dollar bills, the outermost so faded from the sun I couldn't tell at first if it was real. Parts of the note had been compromised by water, but most was ledgible. 'We are the crew of the sailing vessel the Bombardino' it read. The note went on to state all the names of the sailors, gps coordinates, and that they were in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, halfway enroute from Tenerife to Antigua. They had cast the bottle into the ocean on the 3rd of December, 2010. It had taken nearly a year to come into our hands.
We wrote to the email address attached and started a dialogue with Alicia, from Belgium, who had sent the bottle on its watery way to us. We discovered many things in common and a friendship was born. That day and in the days that followed, the world seemed a very small place in the best possible way. It was hard not to feel a little magic in the air.
