This is an interesting tidbit about the recent discovery of a spring in the upper Rio Grande by scientists from NM Tech. Named the Lava Tube, its crater is 12 feet deep and it pumps over 6 thousand gallons a minute into the river system....
We discovered this spring for ourselves late last winter. Desperate for a little fishing to shake off the below zero blues, we hit the Rio Grande at the Colorado State Line and found the river frozen completely over. No water in sight, only ice. With nothing else to do, we bumped down the rough road a ways. Following the course of the river downstream, we stopped several miles later and found a clear green river without even a speck of ice, anywhere. Quite a sight. We actually managed to fish that day, and quite a few after that... Here's the link to the news story.... http://www.santafenewmexican.com/Story/Scientists-find-Rio-Grande-s-largest-spring
