On 01-5-2011 Happy New Year! Fly Fishing the Red River in Late December by Colorado & New Mexico Fly Fishing Guide Rita Adams

2010 was a spectacular year on the water, and 2011 looks more promising still. We're Bahamas bound in ten days! My dad and I hiked into the Red River Canyon here in NM on one of the last days of the year. The first real snowstorm we've had so far hit while we were fishing and we hiked out in a white-out....
The storm didn't hurt the fishing at all, and we both had memorable cuttbows on the line. The highlight though, was when we got to the top. We had scrambled up 'the goat', a game trail that wends through a crack of cliff, and walked to the maintained trailhead where our car was....and about seventy-five head of Elk. They had just climbed out of the canyon too, but they used the trail. We got there just as the first animal crested the hill, and though she seemed to want to reverse direction, the herd hard on her heels kept flowing out...it was like a dream there were so many of them, cows and calves and little bucks all. I haven't been this close to so many Elk since I was charged by a group of angry cows on the summit of Latir mountain 15 years ago. Talk about perfect timing! I went back yesterday to see if I could sniff them out, and saw only sign in the snow, several days old. On the road driving out two big Bulls crossed the road right in front of me and high-tailed it to the trees and the sunset stained pink of the Sangres. Not a bad start to this year. May it be the best one yet for all of us!
